![]() ![]() Gaura is a first year flowering perennial and will bloom in around 14 weeks from an early sowing. The flowers sway and add movement to the garden, so it is a good choice for livening up formal knot gardens and evergreen borders, as well as for cutting and popping in a vase. It is particularly useful for filling in gaps and for linking other planting groups together. This exceptionally long-flowering perennial looks equally at home in an informal cottage-style garden, with naturalistic plantings or among soft grasses in a perennial border. The plants are also ideally suited to growing in patio pots. Although they prefer full sun and a moist soil, they will also tolerate partial shade and drought once established. The plants grow to around 90cm (36in) tall by 60cm (24in) wide and are perfect for the front of sunny borders or edging paths as a mini hedge. The show begins in the early part of summer and continues right through the summer, into autumn, often persisting until the arrival of frost. The first flush of flowers produces pink buds that open into white flowers with long stamens. This long blooming and floriferous perennial produces open, willowy, vase-shaped plants, with long graceful stems that suspend numerous little, dainty, butterfly shaped flowers at their tips. Selected by Christian Kress of Sarastro Nursery in Austria, 'Summer Breeze' is considered to be sturdier with more cold hardiness than other varieties. On March 30 th they’re playing the You Are Not Alone Festival in Manchester and on April 17 th at the Salty Dog Northwich.Introduced in 2008, Gaura lindheimeri 'Summer Breeze' is a hardier, more robust variety that has now been made available in seed form. They’ve recently played a gig on March 8 th for Birds On A Wire Does Women’s Day. It looks like the Cold Water Swimmers are starting to make waves. As Chris says: I’ll Be Your Witness is a reminder that everything you say and do, counts, be that good or bad…” I hope that you choke on the words that you spoke, they come back to haunt you, daunt you, that’s no joke… It has an air of menace with Bridgett holding centre-stage to what is a very foreboding song with intense melodies, driving drum and bass guitar. I’ll Be Your Witness is a darker, more ominous affair. I heard this track recently and can’t get the refrain Open up the window if you want to catch the summer breeze out of my head. It has a great guitar hook that really grabs hold of you and won’t let go. Then the song explodes with a surge of energy. I no longer listen to the words that you say, they’re just words and I brush them away. His voice is haunting and succinctly expresses the agonies of what at times can be a brutal world. Then Bridgett’s vocal comes in searing and honest and his crunchy guitar. Summer Breeze starts with a thumping bass line and drum that brings to mind Kim Deal of the Breeders/Pixies. On March 18 th they release their double A-side Summer Breeze/I’ll Be Your Witness. Having recently celebrated their first birthday with a gig in a boxing ring in Salford there’s certainly nothing boring about the trio. Bass is provided by Carrie Lawson and with Selina Woolnough on drums, they create a very tight unit. He previously played in Dub Sex (one of John Peel’s “lost” bands, Rude Club and Grafters of Denton. Fronted by Chris Bridgett on guitar and vocals he’s been part of the Manchester music scene for quite a while now. ![]() ![]() At the time I was struck by how raw and direct they came across. The Cold Water Swimmers played their debut gig in May 2018 in Manchester’s Northern Quarter area which I attended. ![]()
